Based on his experience of performing over 5,000 rhinoplasties, Dr. Daniel has made Newport Beach a center of excellence for primary Rhinoplasty Surgeries in Newport Beach. He is a Board Certified cosmetic surgeon in Newport Beach who remains absolutely passionate about the operation as it changes people’s lives by giving them greater self-esteem and making them more attractive. Most rhinoplasty or “nose jobs” are done to make the nose look better and for the patient to feel better about their appearance. The majority of Dr. Daniel’s cases are adolescent girls and women who feel that their profile has a bump, their tip lacks definition, and the nose is too big or wide. Essentially, they want a smaller cuter more feminine nose without any sign of surgery. Over the years, Dr. Daniel has learned how important it is to listen to his patients and understand what they want to achieve. At the initial consultation, the patient is given a mirror and asked to identify the 3 things that bother them the most about their nose. These desired changes become the foundation of the operative plan which Dr. Daniel uses to achieve their objectives. Each operation is individualized to the specific patient which leads to a higher satisfaction rate and a lower revision rate.

If the goals are readily apparent, why is rhinoplasty the most difficult of all cosmetic operations and why does it take years for surgeons to master the procedure? The primary factor is the wide variation in nasal anatomy and the patient’s presenting deformity. If one looks at a group of people, the tremendous variation in dorsal humps, nasal tips, and skin thickness are readily apparent. Also, one can see the dramatic changes that occur when an individual smiles or how one nose would look good on a certain face, but not on another. In addition, the surgeon must take into account the function of the nose and any pre-existing septal deviation or valve collapse. It makes no sense to have either a cute nose with poor respiration or better respiration with a persistent nasal deformity. Ultimately, every rhinoplasty is about “form and function.” Due to the wide variation in patients’ anatomy, ethnicity, and goals, it is imperative that the surgeon have a great deal of experience with a wide variety of surgical techniques.

Rhinoplasty surgery has undergone a renaissance over the past 20 years with the highlights including the open approach for dealing with more complex tips, recognition of functional factors including the nasal valves, and dramatic improvement in the results for asymmetric noses. As a result, patients can more often achieve their aesthetic goals while maintaining or improving nasal respiration. One example is the excellent results for patients with “plunging tips.” Many patients complain that their tip drops and widens when they smile. Thus, one of their primary goals of surgery is to have a more refined tip which does not plunge. For decades, many surgeons felt that the problem had to be treated by cutting muscles in the lip. However, as Dr. Daniel has shown in his recent anatomical studies, the real problem is the anatomical configuration of the tip cartilages and the end of the septum. Thus, one achieves the desired tip refinement and rotation which prevents the tip from plunging without having to cut the facial muscles and risk changes in the smile.
